Diablo IV on Nintendo Switch 2: Performance, Features and Cross-Play Explained
Diablo IV: Age of Hatred Collection is now playable on Nintendo Switch 2, and Blizzard has published an FAQ covering the questions everyone asks about a handheld port: how it runs, what carries across, and what you lose without a subscription.
Performance Modes
There are two graphics settings, and the trade-off is the usual one between resolution and frame rate.
- Quality mode – 30 fps at 1080p handheld, 30 fps at 1440p docked
- Performance mode – 40 fps at 1080p handheld, 40 fps at 1080p docked
For an ARPG where the difference between a clean dodge and a death often comes down to a few frames, performance mode is the sensible default – 1440p is a poor trade for ten frames a second in Nightmare Dungeons.
Switch 2 Features Supported
The port makes reasonable use of the hardware, with one notable omission:
- Touchscreen controls – navigate most menus, the map and your inventory by touch, though the Joy-Con 2 mouse function is not supported
- Mouse and keyboard – connect a compatible set over USB
- Controller rumble – supported throughout
- Accessibility – text-to-speech for the chat window, speech-to-text for voice chat, and a Speak for Me function that converts typed text to speech in voice chat
- GameChat – use the Switch 2’s built-in chat and share gameplay in real time
Touch inventory management is the quiet win here. Anyone who has spent an evening comparing affixes with a thumbstick will appreciate being able to simply tap.
Cross-Progression and Cross-Play
Cross-progression works across every supported platform including Switch 2, and crucially it does not require a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Your characters follow you between the handheld and your main platform without conditions.
Cross-play, meaning actually grouping with friends on other platforms, does require an active NSO subscription. That distinction is the single most important thing to understand before buying.
What Works Without a Subscription
A surprising amount, in fact. Without NSO you can still:
- Play the main campaign and side quests
- Take part in open-world activities
- Play local couch co-op
- Access the Tower and its leaderboards
- Access seasonal content and seasonal ranks
What you cannot do without a subscription: join online groups, trade items with other players, join a clan, participate in PvP, or encounter other players out in the world. Diablo IV remains an online game either way, so an internet connection is required regardless.
Purchases and Platinum
Cosmetics bought or earned on Switch 2 are available across all linked platforms, and the same applies to battle pass purchases and rewards.
FAQ
WHAT FRAME RATE DOES DIABLO IV RUN AT ON SWITCH 2?
30 fps in quality mode, 40 fps in performance mode. Docked performance mode needs a 120 Hz or faster display.
DO I NEED NINTENDO SWITCH ONLINE?
Only for cross-play, online groups, trading, clans and PvP. Cross-progression, the campaign, open-world content and seasonal progression all work without it.
WILL MY CHARACTERS TRANSFER FROM PC OR CONSOLE?
Yes, through cross-progression, which covers all supported platforms and requires no subscription.
DOES PLATINUM CARRY OVER BETWEEN PLATFORMS?
Earned Platinum does. Platinum purchased directly on Switch 2 remains locked to that platform.
DOES THE JOY-CON 2 MOUSE MODE WORK?
No. Touchscreen input is supported for menus, the map and inventory, but the Joy-Con 2 mouse function is not.
