Bonus Rolls Stopped Working on Loot-Locked Bosses — Days Before Blizzard Said They Would

If you were saving your Bonus Rolls for a big weekend, I have bad news. The restriction Blizzard announced for next week's maintenance is already live, several days ahead of the timeline they published, and a lot of people found out the hard way when the option simply was not there.

The short version: Bonus Rolls can now only be used on encounters where you are still eligible for loot. Kill a boss, get your drop or your dust, and that boss is closed to coins for the rest of the week on that difficulty.

What Blizzard actually announced

The original post set the change for scheduled weekly maintenance — 1 September in the NA region. Blizzard framed it as bringing Bonus Rolls in line with how loot eligibility works everywhere else in the game, and argued it would be healthier for loot acquisition overall.

Then it turned up early. Wowhead collected multiple reports from players and creators, including Dratnos, confirming the option had already disappeared for bosses killed earlier in the week. Blizzard has not said whether the early rollout is intentional or a bug, so treat the current behaviour as the behaviour until you hear otherwise.

The stockpiling strategy is dead

Here is what this really removes. The old play was to bank your Nebulous Voidcores from the Great Vault, push through to Heroic Ula'tek, and then dump every saved coin on the boss that matters. Heroic bosses drop Myth 1/6 pieces and some of them are genuinely season-defining, so concentrating your rolls there was simply correct.

You cannot do that any more. Your coin has to be spent on the week you kill the boss, which means chasing a specific Ula'tek item is now a three-week job — four, depending on your spec and how many pieces you are hunting. And if you already killed Heroic Ula'tek this week and forgot to coin, that week is simply gone.

One thing that did get better

Worth pairing with this: the hotfixes on 26 August fixed a related annoyance. Great Vault and Bonus Rolled items can now be used at the Creation Catalyst, and raid armour from the Coiled Altar and Ula'tek that previously could not be catalysed when sourced from the Vault or a Voidcore roll now can. Existing items are covered too, so check your bags before you write anything off.

How to plan your week around it

The practical takeaway is that consistency now beats saving. Every week you skip Heroic Ula'tek is a week of Myth-track chances you cannot claw back later, and there is no catch-up mechanic waiting at the end of the season. Get the kill, spend the coin, repeat.

That is easy to say and harder to do when your group is still finding its feet on the back half of the raid. If your roster is not reliably reaching Ula'tek every reset, a Heroic Venomous Abyss run gets you to the boss while the weeks still count.

GetBoost carries Heroic Ula'tek every reset, so your coin lands on the week it is worth something.
